Bird Nest Structural Engineering Workshop

Students became nature inspired engineers by designing bird nests that could protect an egg through shaking, bumps, and movement. As they tested and improved their designs, they discovered how real engineers use biomimicry, learning from nature to create stronger and more resilient structures.

Straw Rocket Showdown Workshop

Students built paper rockets and tested how different designs influenced flight distance and stability. By experimenting with fins, nose cones, and balance, they learned how aerospace engineers reduce air resistance and keep rockets flying straight.

The Bungee Drop Workshop

Students built rubber band bungee cords that lowered a weighted object as close to the floor as possible without touching it. By measuring, predicting, and adjusting their designs, they explored elasticity, Hooke's Law, and how engineers rely on testing to make safe decisions.

Skewer Skyscrapers Workshop

Students worked in teams to build the tallest freestanding skyscraper possible using only skewers and playdough. By testing their structures under the weight of a textbook, they discovered how triangles strengthen buildings and how structural engineers design towers to safely support heavy loads.

Craft Stick Catapult Workshop

Students constructed working catapults using craft sticks and rubber bands before competing to launch marshmallows into a target. Through testing different launch angles and fulcrum positions, they explored levers, trajectory, and the science behind accurate launches.

Wind Cargo Cart Workshop

Students engineered wind powered vehicles capable of carrying cargo across a table using only the force of a handheld fan. Through testing different sail designs and weight placement, they learned how engineers balance speed, stability, and the center of gravity.
